Cost-effectiveness and service improvement through management-trade union partnership

An NHS Trust enjoyed a constructive working relationship with its Staff Side unions but cost improvement programmes and restructuring were causing increasing demoralisation and disengagement. The Trust sought to build a closer relationship with union representatives to enable partnership working to reach its full potential, not just in securing good employment relations but to facilitate win-win outcomes at a time of continual change and uncertainty.

We delivered a short but highly focused programme of activities which:

  • explored evidence and practice on the role of partnership in transformation;
  • facilitated a shared understanding and vision of partnership based on win-win-win outcomes for patients, staff, and the Trust;
  • worked with senior management and Staff Side to create a roadmap for the transformation of partnership in the Trust, and demonstrated practical tools and resources to support its continuing development.
